As all sailboat owners know, reducing weight above the water line is crucial for both speed and stability. The weight of your chain plates can be chopped in half by switching them from stainless steel to titanium. Also, as stainless steel chain plates age, they develop crevice corrosion and cracking with the potential for catastrophic failure. This is mainly due to the high iron content of stainless steel, between 60 to 70 percent. Iron it breaks down (rusts) when it is exposed to moisture and oxygen.
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium is the obvious choice because it will never rust or corrode in the natural environment. Once the titanium plates are installed, they can be comfortably forgotten, without the worry of ever having to change them again. Not only are grade 5 titanium plates lighter and corrosion free, they are over 3 times stronger than stainless steel ones. With a yield strength of 128,000 PSI, grade 5 titanium dwarfs the yield strength of 316 stainless steel, which is around 34,800 PSI.
