Strap Style Allied Titanium Eye - Jaw Toggle for 5/8 inch clevis pin, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Titanium with Polished Finish |
|
|
A staple on any sailboat, the eye jaw toggle can be found in a myriad of locations. Often times they are found connected by a clevis pin to the vessel's rigging, in effect helping to keep the mast upright. A small yet significant component in the rigging, a eye jaw toggle has the capacity to cause big problems. Degradation and failure due to the ever present effects of crevice corrosion in stainless steel can have catastrophic results, causing
untold amounts of damage to the boat as well as endangering the safety of it's passengers and crew.
However, said danger and catastrophe can easily be avoided by simply using a more suitable material able to withstand the effects of crevice corrosion and the extreme forces put upon it by wind and sea. Grade 5 (6Al-4V) titanium eye jaw toggles are approximately 3 times stronger than stainless steel ones made of the same size.
Titanium is also impervious to crevice corrosion in the natural environment. It will never rust or suffer from the destructive effects of crevice corrosion, which deteriorates a material from the inside out. A stainless steel toggle suffering crevice corrosion will look shiny and new on the outside while looking like dirt on the inside. Aside from being stronger and corrosion proof, titanium is about 40% lighter than stainless steel.
