Some sailboats have chainplates that are made by bending a bar into a U or an A, sticking the ends of the bar through a plate, then welding the plate to the bar and threading the ends of the bar. This design of stainless steel chainplate is particularly subject to crevice corrosion where the bar is welded to the plate it passes through.
At the request of our sailing customers, we have redesigned this chainplate to be fabricated from bolts and plates made from grade 5 titanium. This design is much stronger as bolt heads hold the base of the chainplate down while the cross sectional area of the weld holding the base and the tang together is large. As you probably already know, grade 5 titanium is corrosion free and three and half times stronger then stainless steel. We can build them for you in a mill finish (the cheapest way to go), or a satin, sandblasted or polished finish.
